Landform
Higashidate-yama (1,994 m) is one of the peaks around Shiga Kogen, a high plateau built by lava flows. The runs sit on its north flank and stop about 40 m below the rounded summit. The ridge keeps climbing south-east from there to Terakoya-mine (2,125 m) without a real dip in between.
Rock
Every run sampled, from the top of the lifts at 1,952 m down to the base at 1,625 m, sits on one formation: andesite and basaltic andesite lava and pyroclastic rock from the late Pleistocene, roughly 130,000 to 12,000 years old. The summit of Higashidate-yama is the same young rock. Terakoya-mine above it is much older andesite, from the late Miocene to the Pliocene, several million years old. So the whole vertical you ride is one young volcanic layer laid against older ground.

02

How steep it gets

That steep ground sits high on the mountain.

Its steepest pitch measures 26.3°.

Its steepest tenth is steeper than 14 of the 49 mountains here that carry pitch data.

03

How varied it is

Its runs range from 7.8° to 16.3°.

Half of them are gentler than 12.4°. Each mark is one run.

That spread is wider than 2 of the 48 mountains here that carry pitch data.

04

What grows on it

Mostly deciduous: broadleaf woods and larch. They stand bare through the winter, so you can see a long way into them.
