The mountain

大峰山 (Ōmine-yama) 1,172 m

Landform
Ōmine-yama is not a volcano. The national geological map reads its summit as diorite and quartz diorite, intrusive rock that cooled underground and was uncovered later. The summit stands at 1,168.5 m on GSI's laser survey and the highest point on the runs reads 1,141.7 m, so the lifts stop about 27 m short of the top. The ridge between the two does not dip on the way. Echigo-Yuzawa and its hot spring sit at the eastern foot of the hill.
Rock
The mountain carries three rocks and you ride them in order. From the summit down to about 970 m the rock is diorite and quartz diorite, a hard intrusion of Messinian to Pliocene age and the youngest of the three. Below that the ground is Miocene marine mudstone, compacted sea floor mud, soft enough to weather into the broad gentle shelf that the easy courses use. The last drop to the valley floor alternates between that mudstone and Miocene dacite and rhyolite lava with its own fragmented debris, and the steepest pitches on the mountain are cut into that lower band, some into each rock.

That ground is outside the ski area. It is not patrolled.

02

How steep it gets

The steepest quarter of the runs faces north, a different way from the mountain overall.

Its steepest pitch measures 41.7°.

Its steepest tenth is steeper than 10 of the 49 mountains here that carry pitch data.

16.0° the steepest tenth of runs

03

How varied it is

Its runs range from 6.0° to 18.2°.

6.0°18.2°

Half of them are gentler than 10.8°. Each mark is one run.

That spread is wider than 10 of the 48 mountains here that carry pitch data.

04

What grows on it

Mostly deciduous: broadleaf woods and larch. They stand bare through the winter, so you can see a long way into them.
