Pre-trip planning notes
Gathered ahead of your trip as a planning aid — details change; verify locally on arrival.
- Backcountry policy
-
No-entry (立入禁止) areas are absolute — never cross ropes, signs or bamboo poles. Leaving the ski area requires filing a mountain-tour plan (登山計画書) with patrol headquarters and exiting only via the designated gates; avalanche gear (beacon, shovel, probe) is expected and solo travel is discouraged. Violations can mean lift-pass confiscation without refund.
As of 2026-07-21 - Pharmacy
-
About a dozen dispensing pharmacies operate in Furano town — e.g. Sakura Pharmacy (Nishiki-cho), Stella Pharmacy (Suehiro-cho) and several Tsuruha Drug branches. The city's directory advises confirming opening days and hours with each pharmacy directly.
As of 2026-07-21 - Pediatric care
-
Furano Kyokai Hospital runs a pediatrics department (weekday afternoon pediatric outpatient sessions), and Watabe Medical Clinic in town also sees children.
As of 2026-07-21 - Major trauma center
-
Asahikawa Red Cross Hospital (旭川赤十字病院) — the northern-Hokkaido tertiary emergency center and base hospital of the Dōhoku Doctor-Heli air ambulance, whose coverage includes the Furano area.

Cost, insurance and medicines
- Rescue costs
-
Rescue on open courses is handled by patrol. Anyone requesting rescue outside the courses or ski-area boundary pays the costs themselves — the resort states that filing a mountain-tour plan creates no rescue obligation on its side, and all search/rescue expenses fall on the rescued party.
As of 2026-07-21
Japan's National Health Insurance does not cover tourists — hospitals bill the full cost and generally expect payment upfront by cash or card. Ordinary travel insurance often excludes off-piste and backcountry rescue; dedicated mountain-rescue insurance exists, so check your policy before you ride.
Reviewed 2026-07-21Some common medicines are restricted in Japan — e.g. codeine-containing products, pseudoephedrine above set limits, and ADHD stimulants — and may require advance permission to bring in. Check the MHLW guidance before you travel.
Reviewed 2026-07-21Nothing here is medical advice. We compile this information from Japan's national medical registers and the official websites of facilities and resorts, as a planning aid. Hours, phone numbers and services change, and we cannot guarantee that any of it is current or correct. Decisions you make with it are your own responsibility: check with the facility before you go, and in an emergency tell ski patrol or call 119.
